Our on-sight studio offers a place for students, educators, alumni and area professionals to volunteer their time and talent. They get to help their neighbors in Community First! Village looking and feeling their very best. 

The heart of the beauty and barbering industry is found in the desire to lift others up and inspire transformation.

“Our goal is to create a strong foundation of service in our students and staff,” says Linda Daugherty, Superintendent. The word Umuganda can be translated as ‘coming together in common purpose to achieve an outcome’. In traditional Rwandan culture, members of the community would call upon their family, friends and neighbors to help them complete a difficult task. The last Saturday of the month, the entire country shuts down for the morning hours, and the minimum of one representative from each family is required to report for community service.

The Academy learned of Umuganda in 2013 when they started a school, Dream Beauty Academy, in Kigali, Rwanda, Africa. “We want to not only give back to our community, but invest in people, build a network, and built our community. That’s what it’s all about. The more our students give, the more they will get back in their businesses,” said Melissa Bittle, Admissions Director.

Students and staff were at several locations including, Harmony House, three Boys and Girls Club locations, Least of These in Nixa, The Maples Health and Rehabilitation, and at the Academy campus. The Academy hopes to host this event multiple times per year.

A team of three alumni created new looks for 23 of the residents living in Springfield’s domestic violence shelter, Harmony House, during their back-to-school party.

A second team of students and staff, led by our new barber educator, Steven Walski, gave haircuts all day at Victory Mission’s yearly back-to-school event.

We are passionate about serving our community and making a difference in people’s lives. We were thrilled to have the opportunity to serve Springfield students and parents and give kids renewed confidence when heading ba
ck to school. We were thankful for these opportunities and looking forward to continuing to find ways to serve in the coming months and years.

51³Ô¹Ï started Dream Beauty Academy, which opened in 2012. Dream Beauty Academy is a non-profit school located in the city of Kigali in a community center called the Dream Center, and it began as a partnership between our sister cosmetology school in Missouri, and Portland, Oregon, based Africa New Life Ministries. Earlier this summer our Missouri sister school had a concert to help raise money for the Dream Beauty Academy.

In the Dream Center, there is a tailoring school, daycare, seminary, church and sponsorship office. The organization provides 6,000 students with supplies and meals for their families. Rwanda’s economy crumbled during the 1994 Rwandan Genocide and hasn’t fully recovered.

The Dream Beauty Academy provides essentially free cosmetology educations to women and is mostly funded through donations. The Gonzaleses are actively involved in the school and take trips to Rwanda to deliver new school supplies and meet and work with students.

The Gonzaleses are committed to growing 51³Ô¹Ï and their charitable ventures globally by building a network of schools in developing countries to empower people and give them hope. This global-minded strategy should attract strong faculty, students and salon clients who desire to make a difference in the world.
